“The land is life, I thought, is love, is hard work and passion … and gave life to life.”

These thoughts of Romaldo Greco sum up the passion that is invested in producing their wines. The Azienda Agricola Romaldo Greco was founded by Romaldo in 1973 in Seclì, a little village in the heart of Salento peninsula which has always been suited to growing grapes as it benefits from the effects of the warm Mediterranean Sea and the air that conditions the land.

However, Romaldo Greco wines are not just the result of a fortuitous location, Romaldo’s son Antongiulio and a dedicated and knowledgeable team have achieved a level of wine making expertise that escapes the attention of the larger producers around the world.

The winery covers an area of about 15 hectares on four different estates, at Valentini, Murrone, Conte Grande and Renda.

The soil is medium textured, tending towards clay. From one estate to another the soil texture has slight but significant differences that allow a wide heterogeneity in the production, and the company’s ethos is to highlight both tradition and innovation enhancing the grape varieties and reinterpreting the centuries-old farming tradition of this land in a contemporary way.

Negroamaro and Primitivo Grapes

The planted area consists mainly of the two native grapes, Negroamaro and Primitivo from which their exceptionally smooth and rounded Classic and Grand Cru wines of the same name are produced, including a Rosato that is in our opinion so much better than other readily available rose wines available in the UK.

Innovative and Unique

Where the innovation really shows however, is in the planting of international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. From this enterprise they produce a fabulously tasty white wine from the Chardonnay, and a Cru range which includes Cantico and Fabula which are the product of blending together Negroamaro and Cabinet Sauvignon and Syrah respectively, and Elisir which is blended from Primitivo and Merlot – brilliant!!
